Why do you need specialised RV insurance coverage? Isn’t car coverage adequate? Your RV is more than just a car and needs specialised insurance cover because of a number of factors that you may not have considered which may not be covered by a standard auto insurance. You may be able to add RV coverage to your existing auto insurance but if this is not possible you should take out a separate RV insurance.

Personal Property

You probably keep more things in your RV than you would in your car such as DVD players, clothing, jewelry, binoculars, electronic items perhaps cycles and camping gear. All these may be covered by your household insurance but cover may be limited when you are keeping things away from your usual place of residence.

If you are parked at a campsite you may be responsible for any accidents or injuries that occur in the area around your RV.

Gas Leaks Causing Fires

Propane tanks are commonly used for running refrigerators, ovens and water heaters and a common cause of fires is a gas leak. You need to be insured in case this happens and also check for gas leaks regularly from the tank fittings and the gas lines.

Damage to Awnings

Awnings can be easily damaged especially by high winds if not placed in travel position and securely fastened. Make sure that rain can run off easily and not collect in the awning. Always secure it carefully and don’t leave it unattended.

Damage to the RV Itself

A common reason for an insurance claim is damage to the side of the vehicle from misjudging the width and hitting objects. RV’s are wider than most people are used to driving and take some getting used to.

Damage from Pests

A common reason for claiming on RV insurance is for damage due to pests such as mice, squirrels and raccoons etc getting into the RV in search of food. make sure there are no holes by which they can enter, especially if it is parked for some time, during the winter for instance, and do not leave any food in it.

Blown Tires

A common insurance claim for any time of auto insurance is damage caused by tire blowouts. Make sure you check tires regularly and change them when they start to lok worn, before any problems occur.
