Family Insurance Coverage
Family insurance coverage is often offered by insurance companies to cover the healthcare costs of the whole family rather than having to have individual health coverage. Of course the premiums will be quite high but are usually the same however many children you have. Coverage is for all dependent children and both parents. Other family insurance may include a homeowner’s insurance to cover damage to the home and insurance to cover mortgage payments in case of illness or disability occurring to the main breadwinner.
Adding Children to Employers Health Coverage
In many cases it is very expensive to add a child to an existing health coverage plan provided by employers and you may be better taking out a separate family insurance cover, especially if you have more than one child.
What Does Family Insurance Cover?
Family insurance coverage typically covers routine annual examinations for all children under 16 (or 18 in some plans) and prenatal care. Some plans include children up to the age of 24 if they are full time students. Plans may also cover hospital stays, x-rays and laboratory tests, operations etc. Always make sure you know exactly what the plan you are considering covers. You may be able to choose maternity coverage for all family members which may be appropriate for those with female children. While no one wants teenage pregnancy to occur it does happen and the family insurance will cover this.
Family Dental Coverage
Some policies can include family dental coverage or you may need to take out separate family dental insurance coverage. Plans vary in the type of cover they offer and the age limit for any dependant children. Typically the amount of cover that you get is directly related to the monthly payments.
Family Insurance Coverage for Full Time Students
As noted above many plans include dependent children above the age of 18 if they are in full time education. Coverage may extend to 23 or 24. Make sure you check that the facilities on campus, local hospitals or physicians will accept the family’s insurance and provide the student with an insurance card.
What May Not Be Included
Family insurance coverage may not include some procedures common in childhood, replacement for eyeglasses, allergy tests or braces. Check the coverage offered by the plan you are considering and think about starting a savings plan for anything that is not covered by your family insurance.
